In the Origin Denomination Vinos de Madrid we can differentiate three sub zones with their own conditions and characteristics.
Arganda
This zone consists of 30 municipalities in the Community of Madrid and represents 50% of the wines registered with the Control Board.
The Jarama river, an affluent of the Tagus, and its tributaries, the Tajuña and the Henares flow through this area. The continental climate with an average temperature of 14 ºC, the low rainfall with 461 mm per year and the abundant sunshine – over 2.8900 hours per year, makes this region suitable for production of high quality wines.
The white Malvar and the Red Tempranillo grapes are the most widely grown in the area.
Navalcarnero
Located in the south of the community, the Navalcarnero sub zone is a plain divided from north to south by the Guadarrama river. It consists of 19 municipalities and represents the 14% of the wines in the community. The predominant grape variety is the red Garnacha.
Average rainfall is 529 mm per year. This area is traditionally known for its roses wines, but it has raised eyebrows recently by producing very high quality reds.
San Martín
This area includes 9 municipalities in the southwest of the community and accounts for 35% of the wines in the area. The main grape varieties are the white Albillo and the red Grenache. Proximity to the central mountain system protects the area from the cold north winds. This results in its continental climate having milder temperatures with moist conditions.
